Pakistan Day Celebrated in South Africa

March 23, 2016 - Pretoria

'Pakistan shares a common future vision with the rest of the world: to live in a world where democracy, peace and prosperity prevail. There is a growing realization that inter-state disputes can be resolved through peaceful means alone. Globalization and increasing economic interdependence are creating new impulses for collaboration. Africa’s importance and the role of South Africa are being realized while indispensability of regional cooperation for development becomes obvious” High Commissioner Najm us Saqib remarked while addressing the function organized to celebrate Pakistan Day, in Pretoria. He stated that the leadership in Islamabad was “effectively tackling the whole range of economic, security and energy related challenges that we confront in Pakistan today.”

The High Commissioner highlighted the contours of Pakistanis liberal and friendly investment policy and invited the international community especially the business community in South Africa to come and invest in Pakistan. In this regard, the High Commissioner mentioned Pakistan’s Vision 2025 that seeks to transform Pakistan's economy and address problems of energy shortage for sustained economic revival and development.

Hon. Tshililo Michael Masutha, the Cabinet Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, representing the Government of South Africa as the Chief Guest, stated that Pakistan was a very important country of the world.  In particular, the Minister praised Pakistan’s efforts in bringing the economy back to track for the welfare of over 200 million people of Pakistan. Responding to a point earlier raised by the High Commissioner in his remarks, Minister Masutha profusely praised Pakistan’s concerted efforts in combating terrorism and wished to have durable peace in the region. He also spoke of the friendly relations between the two countries while emphasizing the need to seize the opportunities for increased cooperation between the two countries especially in trade.

The other notable guests who attended the celebrations included Mr. Ebrahim Ebrahim,
Parliamentary Counsellor to the President of South Africa, Army Chief of South Africa,  Lieutenant General L. Yam, Prince of Swaziland D. Muzi (son-in-law of Nelson Mandela), Members of Pakistan National Assembly Hon. Sabiha Nazir, Hon. Azhar Khan Jadoon and Hon. Babar Nawaz Khan.

During the function, a mini exhibition was also organized wherein Pakistani products like carpets, surgical good, sports goods, kitchen utensils, rice and other exportable items were displayed. Special documentaries on Pakistan were shown on screen. A house full of distinguished guests comprising the diplomatic corps, Members of Parliament, Government officials, defense representatives, business community, members of media and civil society, academicians, think tanks and members of Pakistan community attended and enjoyed the beautifully organized Pakistan Day Reception.
