Wolf Warrior II is a 2017 Chinese action film directed by Wu Jing, who also stars in the lead role. The film also stars Frank Grillo as Big Daddy and Celina Jade as a Chinese doctor trying to find a cure for a deadly disease.

The movie was released in China on 27 July 2017 and is a massive commercial success. It has become the highest-grossing Chinese film ever.

The film broke numerous box office records, including the biggest single-day gross for a Chinese film. Its $810 million take, after just five weekends, has made “Wolf Warrior II” the second-highest-earning title in a single territory in history behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in North America.

The film was shot on locations in Africa and China between June 2016 and November 2016. The scenes shot in Africa were mostly filmed in Soweto and Alexandria in South Africa.

The movie has a strong patriotic tone, which tells the story of former Special Forces soldier, Leng Feng (Wu) who has been stripped of his military rank in the elite fighting unit known as Wolf Warriors after crossing paths with authority figures in rural China. He stumbles into an African war zone and rescues Chinese citizens from Western mercenaries. He works as a ship security and tries to track down the owner of the bullet that claimed his lover’s life.

The movie begins with a freighter under siege by pirates, and as they disable the ship’s propellers Leng Feng simply dives into the ocean, capsizes a pirate boat, and proceeds to beat up and lasso its occupants underwater without coming up once for air. This is just a small taste into the action that the movie holds.

The movie is a relentless series of action sequences featuring martial arts combat, gun battles, car chases and a tank battle. Leng Feng's athletic prowess makes his fights and hand to hand combats quite arresting.

Watching this movie is an entertaining, fun, over-the-top, experience. Having been mostly exposed to Hollywood action, it's unsettling yet good to see the good-versus-evil from the Chinese perspective.

Wolf Warrior 2 was released in South African cinemas on 10 November 2017 and is currently on circuit.
