Austria and SA share choral tradition

23 September 2019

The St. Florian Boys’ Choir from Austria, which has a 1,000-year history, recently toured South Africa. Over the past decade, the choir has travelled all over the world, participating in significant musical festivals.

Today the St. Florian Boys’ Choir is an internationally active choir with a diverse repertoire and a clear goal, to convey the joy of making music to their audience, they say.

Dr Johann Brieger, Ambassasor of Austria and Mrs Roswitha Brieger hosted the choir at their official residence in Pretoria where they performed for an intimate audience. The Choir performed  a native dance, the Schuhplattler, Austria’s version of gumbooting. Among the songs they performed, a beautiful rendition of the South African national anthem received rousing applause.

The choir had just toured KwaZulu Natal where they performed with the Drakensberg Boys Choir. In Kwazulu Natal the choir were hosted by different families and were grateful for the opportunity to experience the South African way of life. Some had stayed on a game farm where they excitely relayed their experience of viewing the likes of giraffe and zebra up close.

Dr Brieger also used the opportunity to bid farewell to Mr Marcus Cornaro, Ambassador of the European Union who, after four years, completes his tour of duty in South Africa.
